tiffany They've been a Frontierland fixture for more than 20 years, but Billy Hill and the Hillbillies this weekend kicked off their final season of performances at Disneyland. The Disney Parks Blog posted the announcement last week that Disneyland has decided to retire the popular quartet on January 6, 2014. The group confirmed Disney's decision with this posting on the official Billy Hill and the Hillbillies website:

After reducing the group's performance schedule at the Golden Horseshoe from seven days a week to five in 2009, Disney moved the group from the Golden Horseshoe to the out-of-the-way Big Thunder Ranch arena last summer. Some speculated this most recent move signaled that the Billies' days were numbered. The new venue required the group to match their performance to the current theme of the ranch, presenting The Haunted Hillbillies show during HalloweenTime and the Jingle Jangle Christmas Show. That show is scheduled seven days a week through January 6, 2014, the group's scheduled last day at Disneyland.

There are opportunities to see the group and some of the individual performers outside Disneyland. Kirk Wall (best known as Elvis Billy) performs at a Fullerton club the first Wednesday of each month, and Dennis Fetchet performs with a group called the Grateful Dudes . You can also find a trove of Billies videos on YouTube, many of which are listed on the group's website . Check the website for announcements of their upcoming non-Disneyland performances.

Social media stars help launch Disney's new marketing campaign

Disney's new marketing campaign is based on the simple premise that everyone has a "Disney Side," the part of you that gleefully skips down Main Street, U.S.A. on your way to meet Mickey Mouse, or proudly dons a Goofy hat and matching shirts at your family reunion. For weeks, Disney has encouraged fans to submit photos and videos showing their Disney Side via social media sites YouTube and Instagram, and even hosted a contest asking fans to "Vine" their Disney Side using the new micro video site.

Of course, very few of us can lay claim to hundreds of thousands of Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram followers, so Disney turned to a group of personalities they dubbed the Social Media All Stars to help officially launch the promotion. The group gathered at Disneyland last week for a Disney Side event, and each All Star hosted contests to award tickets to the event to their fans.

The event kicked off with a photo moment at Sleeping Beauty Castle, where fans were invited to take a self-portrait ("selfie") of themselves to post to their favorite social media site. Disneyland claims to be the most-Instagrammed place on Earth, and this photo was intended to be the largest "selfie" ever taken.

From there, event guests were invited to the Fantasyland Theater for the Disney Side premiere, where many of the All Stars debuted new content created just for Disney. There was a new " Convos With My Two Year Old " video from YouTube stars Matthew Clarke and David Milchard, new music from Tiffany Alvord and Mike Tompkins , and even a hairstyle how-to from Mindy McKnight from Cute Girls Hairstyles.

Many of the All Stars participated in a meet-and-greet after the premiere. For many fans, the highlight of the event was a rare in-person appearance by Grumpy Cat. French Bulldog and Instagram sensation Trotter also appeared in a Disney-inspired outfit, along with father-and-daughter performing duo Reality Changers, Vine stop-motion animator Ian Padgham , and Zeddy Little, the "Ridiculously Photogenic Guy" of Internet meme fame.

We've also heard that Disney has a plan for making more candy canes available each day this year, which should help ease the crunch when hundreds of people compete for the hundred or so candy canes made each day. You can confirm the candy cane dates by calling the candy hotline at (714) 781-0112 before your visit. This recording is updated each week.

I had a few questions regarding a possible winter visit. I have made a hotel reservation at the Hojo for 12/16, 17, 18 and 19, Monday – Thursday, week before Christmas. I have read on the boards here that this week would already be quite busy, and the Disneyland hours confirm that - park is open until 11pm those days. However, no schools are out yet that I could find (checked several CA districts), and Touring Plans predicts low crowds for Monday and Tuesday, medium crowds for Wednesday and Thursday. Hotel rooms were also reasonable across the board. Could this mean there is sort of a "sweet spot" where Disneyland is gearing up for crowds but it will not be that crowded yet?

 

For January, I can get a better rate at the Hojo. We would go Jan 6, 7, 8, 9, so pretty much again a Monday - Thursday visit. Schools are back in session. There is no crowd predictor yet, nor are park hours posted, but I would think with the decorations gone, the park would be pretty quiet? Or would there be many people like me who were planning to avoid Christmas crowds and are in fact filling the park?

 

I am sure we would love to see Disneyland decked out in holiday decorations. However, I think low crowds are more important to us.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website . When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

The Expedia website lists the following special offer: Book your Disneyland Resort Park 3-Day Hopper Ticket by September 30, 2013 and redeem now through October 31, 2013 to receive an Adult ticket for the Child ticket price (price listed reflects savings).

Their listed price is $243.99 for an adult 3-day Park-Hopper Bonus ticket, one cent less than the child ticket. The regular price of that ticket is $260, so you save $16 if you book through Expedia. There do not appear to be any additional booking fees, and you receive your voucher immediately, so this seems to be a legit way to save a little on a 3-day Park Hopper ticket. You can read the fine print on our MousePad discussion forums.

Get Away Travel has a similar offer with different dates. Tickets must be purchased by August 10 for travel through December 31, 2013. You must purchase the tickets at least four days in advance. The Get Away Travel offer also includes a $10 ESPN gift card.

2013–2014 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($129) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses.

The 2013-2014 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid August 12, 2013, through September 25, 2014. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $129 each.

For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines "Eligible Service Members" as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the "Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission," which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present.

Tickets are blocked out through December 19, 2013 through December 31, 2013; April 13, 2014 through April 20, 2014; and July 4, 2014. As far as we can tell, there is no "fuse" on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a "bonus" ticket, and so does not include an early admission day.

If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:

Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club. If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre-purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward.

ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required ( link ).

Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel .

Discounts for Annual Passholders

Disneyland Resort hotels – Disneyland Resort annual passholders can save 15 to 25 percent off rooms at the three Disneyland Resort Hotels this fall. The offer is valid for most nights October 20 through December 19, with blockout dates of of November 27–29. This package includes one Fastpass for each person on the reservation, and a voucher for a free 5" x 7" PhotoPass print. Full details on the Disneyland website .

Disneyland Resort merchandise – Disneyland has once again extended the 20 percent merchandise discount offered to Premium annual passholders. The discount is now valid through December 31, 2013.

Discounts for Disney Visa Cardholders

Character Meet-and-Greet – cardholders have access to a private character meet-and-greet photo opportunity at Disney California Adventure, and receive one free 5"x7" photograph per visit.

Disneyland Resort merchandise – Cardholders also receive 10 percent off qualifying merchandise purchases of $50 or more from Disney-operated retail stores.

Disneyland Resort dining – 10 percent off at selected Disneyland Resort restaurants, (Big Thunder Ranch, River Belle Terrace, French Market, Cocina Cucamonga, Steakhouse 55, PCH Grill and Storyteller's Café).

Disneyland Resort Guided Tours – 20 percent off the "Welcome to Disneyland," "A Walk in Walt's Footsteps," and "Discover the Magic" guided tours.

2013–2014 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($129) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses.

The 2013–2014 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through September 25, 2014. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $129 each.

For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines "Eligible Service Members" as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the "Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission," which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present.

Tickets are blocked out December 19–31, 2013; April 13–20, 2014; and July 4, 2014. "There will continue to be significant costs to future provocations," she said.

Rice emphasized the importance of regional security cooperation with U.S. allies including Australia, which was holding annual talks on defense and other issues with the U.S. on Wednesday. Afterward, U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced that the number of U.S. Marines deployed in northern Australia there would rise to 1,100 next year.

Obama administration is seeking to rebalance America's military presence toward Asia from the Mideast - widely viewed as a response to China's military buildup. A report to the U.S. Congress released Wednesday predicted Beijing could possess the largest fleet of modern submarine and combatant ships in the western Pacific by 2020.

Rice did not directly address those concerns in her speech, but she referred to maritime disputes that China has with neighbors as posing a "growing threat to regional peace and security."

She said America's military engagement with China is improving, and that greater transparency could help manage "the realities of mistrust and competition" between the two powers.

She said the U.S. also seeks to elevate its economic relationship with China, and welcomed plans of market-based reform announced by the nation's ruling communist party last week. She said if realized, the reforms could go a long way toward leveling the playing field for foreign and private investors.

Rice said China, like any nation, would be welcome to join a trans-Pacific trade pact the U.S. is negotiating with Japan and 10 other countries but it must be willing to live up to the pact's high standards.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership is meant to reduce tariffs and regulatory barriers, as well as unfair practices by state-owned enterprises, which remain a dominant in key sectors of China's economy.

The U.S. wants to negotiate the agreement by year's end, but analysts say that will be very tough to pull off.

Piegza, founder of the small-group luxury tour company Classic Journeys, now uses a carry-on zippered Victorinox bag ($235), which won't tear when stuffed. Finally, for the ladies, Piegza suggests a pashmina wrap. His wife treasures hers because it's soft, light and easily accessorizes various outfits. It also folds up small but is big enough to serve as a blanket.

STAYING ORGANIZED

Cellphone, iPod, tablet, Kindle, camera â many travellers carry them all, plus chargers and cables. GreatUsefulStuff.com sells Kangaroomstorage bags to protect and organize gadgets. A two-sided cord pouch ($25) has 10 see-through compartments with slots you can label and removable dividers so compartments can be enlarged. The compact personal media pouch ($13) has six small pockets and can fit a Kindle or iPad Mini too.

Kohl's carries toiletry kits for young travellers with Batman and Superman logos, and for men, a Dockers brand ($40). ToiletTree has a classy black leather kit ($20), while Flight 001 offers colorful Avery cosmetic bags with Eiffel Tower and white cross-on-red logos ($35).

STAYING CONNECTED

For charging gadgets overseas, Flight 001 sells a compact adapter with four colour-coded plugs, good for 150 countries ($25), along with a dual wattage converter ($30) to use North American appliances overseas.

To keep cellphones working on the go, give the gift of backup power, like Anker's Astro Slim2 external battery ($33). Charge the battery beforehand, and when the phone dies, plug it into the battery. For sunny climes, consider a solar-powered charger. Popular brands include Anker, Solio and Goal Zero, but do your research. Consumer reviews suggest some don't work as well as advertised.

FOR BIKERS

NEW MILFORD -- Since January, the Faith Preparatory School cafeteria has been the place where people driven from their New York City homes by Superstorm Sandy met Sunday afternoons to eat, give thanks and share stories of survival.

As the one-year anniversary of the devastating storm drew near, fewer of those living in the mobile homes on the Faith Church property have stopped by. This past week, not even 10 showed up.

"It started in the last couple of months," said Dennis Klaus , a 62-year-old former Brooklyn, N.Y., resident. "People know everybody's stories. They don't want their kids to always be known as storm victims and they are ready to move on."

As of the end of the year, they will be moving on. The town will not extend the agreement with the church and the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which supplied the temporary housing for the 14 families from Staten Island, Brooklyn and Queens displaced by the superstorm.

"The arrangement with the town of New Milford and the state of Connecticut was that because of the sanitary issues, such as the septic system, this was a temporary arrangement and all the units needed to be vacated by Dec. 31," said John Hodge , a church member and operations director of the foundation, which is named for his cousin, a New York City firefighter who was killed at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.

"We're determined to live up to our agreement with the town," Hodge said. "New Milford has been fantastic and did what New York would not do -- took these people in."

Many of the evacuees have already found other places to live. Some, like Meaghan Wentland , are planning to return to their former homes, which are in the process of being rebuilt. But a majority of the families want to stay in New Milford, Hodge said.

Victoria Ledeneva , her husband Valeriy Kalashnikov , and their two sons, Alex, 6, and Ivan, 7, will be among the half-dozen or so who will be moving, along with their trailers, to the Candle Hill-North Mobile Home Park at the other end of New Milford.

Ledeneva had passed the bar exam and just started working for a lawyer in Brooklyn when the monster storm drove the family from their home in the Midland Beach section of Staten Island. She lost that job, but has since established her own practice in Brooklyn and commutes there twice a week.

"We feel like we are free from city problems here," Ledeneva said. "Even though we lost everything, it is better for us to be here."

But for a few, like Klaus and Maryann Daino , a 62-year-old ex-Staten Islander who met and started a relationship after coming to New Milford, the future is clouded by uncertainty.

"As of the 31st, I'm going to be homeless," she said.

She and Klaus hope to find temporary lodging, perhaps as caretakers, until they can get their respective finances in order and qualify for a mortgage that will allow them to buy their own home. Like some other Sandy refugees, they would like it to be in Connecticut.

"We love Connecticut," Klaus said. "People here have been incredible to us, and the church has been phenomenal. We'd like to give something back."

Just before Christmas, storm survivors began moving into the 14-foot -by-48-foot mobile homes, provided by the foundation and located on a four-acre parcel off Route 7 that is part of the Faith Church campus.

But even in Connecticut, some have been unable to escape the problems generated by Sandy.

Wentland's mother is a security guard in New York City, staying with friends during the week and returning to New Milford on weekends. She was swindled out of $14,000 by an unscrupulous contractor who was supposed to repair her house, but never finished the job.

Volunteers, including Habitat for Humanity , stepped in, and Wentland, who has an 18-month-old son, hopes it will be finished by December.

Eventually, she said she would like to return to Connecticut, where she and her boyfriend, who works in Windsor, can raise their child.

"We've made real good friends here, and I plan on coming back," she said.

Over the past 10 months, many evacuees have become part of the church community, worshipping there on Sunday and enrolling their children in the school, while working to reestablish the lives disrupted by the storm.

But as time has gone by, they said they have grown tired of being interviewed by newspapers and television stations, especially in the past few weeks, as the anniversary of the superstorm was approaching.

On Monday, a "No Trespassing" was put up outside the trailers.

"You just get tired of baring your soul," Klaus said.
