The vow renewal was originally our daughter Charlotte's idea. When my husband lost his wedding ring in the ocean, she saw an opportunity: "You should get married again!" Shortly afterward, Philippe surprised me with a proposal in front of the girls, presenting me with my dream Edwardian-era antique ring. (I was unceremoniously washing breakfast dishes at the time.) The girls were thrilled and immediately got into wedding-planning mode -- Valentine, 8, and Charlotte, 7, would be junior bridesmaids and Margaux and Oceane, both 6, would be the flower girls. And we were off!

In 2003, I married Philippe in a tiny village in the South of France. This time around, though, we'd be doing it with our four daughters, and in our hometown of Coronado, Calif. I committed to skipping the wedding planning stress entirely. I wanted a special day to remember, but I didn't want the reception logistics to overtake the meaning of the vows. And, I didn't want to spend a fortune on one day (four college educations do not just pay for themselves).

We made a single decision that would shape our whole event, and save us a lot of stress and money in the process: Instead of thinking "wedding," we thought "reunion." If we could have our most cherished friends together in one place at the same time (and this time half of them would be under the age of 10!), what would we want to do together? (Answer: Karaoke. Duh.) And what would we all want to eat? (Something fun and tasty!) We had a retro food truck, a gourmet hot dog stand, and an outdoor paella station, serving dishes that had some meaning to us. And, the food all looked perfectly in theme served in paper containers, keeping cleanup super easy. Our casual reception still felt (and looked) special, with thoughtful touches.

Any time you are hosting a hundred people, though, there are details to manage. The Sunday before the vow renewal, however, I had an epiphany -- the last days leading up to the event can easily be hijacked by logistics and surface stuff (Will my hair look good? Are those new wrinkles around my eyes?). But the primary purpose for us needed to stay in our family coming together and adding a new layer of meaning to the vows we made (rather naively I must say in hindsight) ten years ago. I made a conscious decision to embrace the imperfection that is my life: Wrinkles, come if you must when I smile, because they are evidence that I have smiled much in my life. Dresses, feel free to get crumpled when the girls run around two seconds after I've steamed them, because I'm lucky to have girls who run and play in their joy. Nothing would stop our family from holding hands in front our pastor and closest friends and speaking our commitment to each other. My hope was to stay centered in that. And, I did.

I love the joy on Philippeâs face during the service. My favorite little side plot in this photo: Oceaneâs flower ball fell apart when she tripped heading to the beach. As soon as the ceremony was underway, she silently smiled at me and gently took my bridal bouquet and placed her wobbly ball of flowers in my hands.

The Rings

The girls circled together and held hands as we exchanged rings. Philippeâs was an exact replica of the ring heâd lost in the ocean, and mine was the ânewâ antique ring Philippe had used to propose the second time.

Including the Girls

Our daughters were an important part of the ceremony. They held hands as we made our vows to them, and then they each had a chance to share what they love about our family. Including the girls in the recommitment bonded us in a powerful way.

Sand Ceremony

Since we live at the beach, it only seemed fitting to do a sand ceremony instead of a candle ceremony. We each scooped up a small container of sand to pour into a large conch shell. âYou may now kiss the brideâ was met with quite a reaction from our girls, which is surprising because ever since the proposal, the girls have been clinking their glasses with their forks to get us to kiss, over dinner, over breakfast, you name it.

All in the Family

Our family sits together on a ledge right after the ceremony, just in front of the Hotel Del Coronado, where we spend a lot of time as a family. Classic Coronado.

Giving Thanks

At our wedding in 2003, we wrote each guest a personal note to put at their place-setting, letting them know how special their presence was. Our renewal party didnât have a formal sit-down dinner, so we adapted that concept to match our family-friendly gathering with a chalkboard message.

Fuss-Free Refreshments

We wanted to keep the party logistics simple, so instead of a full bar, we served large self-serve jugs of pretty sangria made with white wine, lemons and raspberries. We also offered cucumber water, lemonade, and a huge galvanized steel tub of vintage-bottled sodas and beers. Refill fuss: eliminated.

Last-Minute Dumpster Decor

I loved taking this photo â sitting with my family in our front yard, full of joy. (Fun fact: Those chairs were an alley dumpster find about two hours before the reception â a neighbor was throwing them away, but I think they added a perfect vintage touch to our party.)

Paella Perfection

Philippeâs dad is famous in the family for his paella, which he makes on an open fire in a huge paella pan in his backyard. We had paella for our rehearsal dinner ten years ago. So, we incorporated that into our vow renewal by having a huge shrimp, chicken and chorizo paella made for our guests (by a chef, not Philippeâs dad!).

Cheers to Double-Duty Ideas

I love a purchase that does double (or triple) duty. I bought mason jars online (free delivery; no lugging) that we used as glasses. Inexpensive bright straws and daisy-cut jar tops turned them into a decoration too. Bonus: They were also our favors, which meant I didnât have to wash them after the party was over.

Saddle Up to the (Crostini) Bar

We had lots of food planned for our guests dinner, so we didnât want them to fill up too much on appetizers. Still, we wanted some nibbles to greet them when they walked in. Our solution: a crostini bar with several dip options, including a tapenade, which we served at our wedding aperitif years ago. Butcher paper and markers kept the spread whimsical.

Princess Dreams

Valentine and Charlotte couldnât help themselves from twirling all party long in their gorgeous dresses (from a designer in Australia that I found online!).

A Food Truck Picnic

Our guests loved the retro feel of the food truck! Philippe and I just <em>had</em> to pose with it. For easy and fun seating, we put out colorful blankets and huge sparkly cushions so that guests could enjoy a tasty picnic in the yard!

DIY Decor

Nothing fancy about eating paella off a paper plate and drinking out of a mason jar, but thatâs exactly how we wanted the reception to feel: easy, but inviting and welcoming. Decorating with lemons and loose flower arrangements helped us achieve that look. DIY tip: I bought flowers from the wholesale flower market the day before.

Less Than $20 Per Person

We wanted to serve craveworthy and but unfussy foods like artichoke grilled cheese sandwiches on buttery crusty sourdough bread, giant crunchy crab cakes, sweet potato fries with sriracha mayo, gourmet hotdogs, and paella. Everyone loved the food, and the casual plating felt retro and fun. And, budget brides take note: We fed 100 very happy people for <em>under</em> $20 a head.

Gifts for a Cause

Instead of bringing gifts, friends brought food to donate to the local food bank. The kids also put out a jar for donations to Share Our Strengthâs <a href="http://www.nokidhungry.org" target="_hplink">No Kid Hungry</a> campaign (and even put in a few dollar bills of their own for inspiration!). Not pictured: Little Margaux accidentally eating a granola bar from the donation table later in the party -- she thought it was a cereal and granola potluck of sorts.

Best. Entertainment. Ever.

Have you heard of live karaoke? Neither had I. Itâs karaoke, with an actual band playing behind you. You are a singer in a rock band. Itâs a dream-come-true.

Fun for All Ages

Even the kids all wanted to be rock stars! Itâs hard to keep both kids and adults entertained for a long party, but live karaoke worked like magic.

Impressive Yet Simple Dessert Display

Our dessert table was surprisingly simple. I picked up two blood orange ricotta cakes decorated with flowers for the adults. For the kids, we decorated 6 dozen plain supermarket cupcakes (about $30!) with a tiny flower, which made them look âwedding-likeâ once we placed them on a (borrowed) cake stand. We also served a varied selection of cheeses, in honor of the cheese course we served at our wedding (in France). We stacked the cheeses and decorated them to mimic the look of a traditional American wedding cake.

Espresso, Anyone?

We love espresso, so we set up a couple of machines, filled up a crate with some mismatched tea cups from our garage to make a self-serve espresso stand. Not pictured: We served a 5-pound block of Belgian dark chocolate with a little mallot, so people could hammer out a nice chunk of chocolate to go with their espresso, or just aloneâŚthe kids loved the big hunk of chocolate!

Something Old, Something New

Our photographer suggested re-creating this snapshot from our wedding that we used for Thank You cards. I might be biased, but I think Philippe looks even better today than he did ten years ago.

Jordan Taylor also relishes the opportunity to co-drive with his older brother, and felt it was virtually inevitable. But, he also felt cautious about it taking place in due time.

âI think weâve both had the chance to prove ourselves out there on our own the last several years,â Jordan Taylor said. âWith Ricky having earned all those poles and winning all those races with Max, and then our championship this year with Max, the timing seems to be ideal for maximizing our recent success with Ricky and myself as full-time co-drivers. Max has been a like a brother to both of us and it will be great to keep that continuity going, as well, with him as our mentor and co-driver at the longer races.â

Angelelli, whose five victories in 2013 lifted his career Rolex Series total to 26 wins â trailing only Scott Pruettâs 41 and Memo Rojasâ 27 on the all-time Rolex Series win list â looks to add to his career numbers by continuing as co-driver at the major endurance events. The team also continues to seek funding for a second Daytona Prototype for the 2014 season and beyond, for which Angelelli would become the primary driver alongside another professional competitor.

âBack in 1999, when I first met Wayne and started driving with him, Ricky was just born, and Jordan came along two years later. So, obviously I never could have dreamed of the day when I would be driving together with them, especially at such a high level,â Angelelli said. âBoth are extremely talented drivers, as I have had the chance to experience first-hand being their co-driver. But both of them are very different from each other, so I am anxious to see how their unique strengths will complement each other. As you saw with our championship this year with Jordan, it takes a total team effort, and the one area where they are incredibly similar is that both are the ultimate team players. I will be stepping back from a full-time role driving the sprint races but I am looking forward to driving with them in the four biggest races of the year â four of the most historic and important races in sports car racing. I also feel incredibly blessed and grateful to have a family that has loved me and has believed in me during such a long and successful run. The chance to continue as the boysâ mentor and co-driver at the four big races is the least I can do to give back to them. It will be icing on the cake.â

The previous induction ceremonies â reflecting the national scope of the organization â were held in San Diego and New Orleans. The 2013 NSHOF Induction Ceremony, held Sunday, October 27, was dedicated to the U.S. Naval Academy, with whom the NSHOF has partnered in its quest to preserve Americaâs sailing legacy, embed sailing in education, and recognize sailingâs heroes. 'At the Naval Academy we view sailing as the best platform for leadership development,' said Commander Les Spanheimer, Director of Naval Academy Sailing. 'Our midshipmen will soon be thrown into some very dynamic situations as naval aviators, surface warfare officers, submariners, Navy Seals and Marine officers. It is onboard a sailboat that they get practical experience working as a crewâŚ and they learn a complex set of skills and subject matter expertise.' In thanking the NSHOF for dedicating the ceremony to the Academy, Spanheimer added: 'Whether weâre preserving our nationâs nautical history or developing our nationâs future leaders under sail, I think our purposes intersect quite nicely.' Six living sailing legends were celebrated for their impact on the sport: NSHOF President Gary Jobson and Inductee Timmy Larr. - NSHOF/Jack Hardway Click Here to view large photo Three-time U.S. Womenâs Sailing Champion Timmy Larr (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) is only the second woman, to date, to be inducted into the National Sailing Hall of Fame. 'To be even considered to be in this group of superstarsâŚ itâs unbelievable. Thank you,' said Larr a two-time Yachtswoman of the Year (1961, 1965). 'I stand here to accept this honor not for me, but for all the teams Iâve worked with. I couldnât have done anything without my crews, we were always a team. I may have been recognized for the honor, but it was they who actually made it all happen.' A naval architect, Larrâs competitive accomplishments in the 1960s put her at the forefront of the sport at a time when it was rare to see a woman at the top of the podium. More recently, her pioneering contributions in standardizing the sail training program in the U.S. was the catalyst for similar programs for judges and race committee officials. She established the National Junior Sailing Symposium, and assisted in the formulation of the Small Boat and Keelboat Certification Systems, as well as the new Powerboat Program. She also co-authored or contributed to the textbooks and instructor manuals used in the Certification Systems. Her efforts in maintaining high quality standards for sail training have earned the programs the respect of the US Coast Guard, US Power Squadron and the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators. These systems have helped thousands of people of all ages to learn to race, cruise, teach and coach â always with safety a paramount consideration. She was awarded the Nathanael G. Herreshoff Trophy â for outstanding contribution to the sport â by US Sailing in 1992. Best known in sailing circles as a three-time Star World Champion (1961, â70, â85) and 1984 Star Olympic Gold Medalist, Bill Buchan (Medina, Wash.), can also lay claim to Olympic sports trivia: he was 49 years old in 1984, making him the oldest member of the entire US Olympic Team across all sports; and as he won his gold medal in the Star class, his son, Carl Buchan, was winning one in the Flying Dutchman class at the same Games. 'If it wasnât for Seattle Yacht Club arranging for the 1948 Star North Americans, I wouldnât be standing here today,' said Buchan whose parents had immigrated to Seattle from Scotland in the early 1920s to work in the fishing industry. When the Star caught Billâs eye, his father, who built houses and boats in his spare time, built a Star for his son and then crewed for him. By the time they built a third boat, they had figured out how to make it fast. By 1954 Bill had become a builder of record for the Star class; the improvements he has made to the build process over the years are evident in the use of the Buchan hull shape by current-day builders. 'After I won the worlds in 1961, my dad said to me â luckily one of the few pieces of advice from my dad that I did not take â he said âthatâs as good as itâs gonna get, I think you should quit sailing now.â Thank goodness I didnât take that [advice].' NSHOF Inductee Dave Curtis and Gary Jobson, NSHOF President. - NSHOF/Jack Hardway Click Here to view large photo The sailing resume of Dave Curtis (Marblehead, Mass.), a two-time ICSA All-American (â67, â68) while at Tufts University (from whence he graduated in 1968 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering), is replete with one-design titles in a number of classes, significant among them the Soling World Championship in 1981, two Soling North American Championships (â99, â97), and the J/24 World Championship in 1984, as well as gold medals at the Pan Am Games in two different classes: J/24 (â83) and Soling (â79). The seven-time Etchells World Champion (â76, â79, â81, â82, â83, â85 and â92) and two-time Rolex Yachtsman of the Year (â81, â83) has made a career as a sailmaker known for building fast sails. 'Iâm more nervous than at any other trophy presentation Iâve ever been to before,' said Curtis, joking that he had been to more than a few. 'Iâm truly honored to be here and be included in the greats of this sport of sailing going back to Joshua Slocum.' Curtis credited his father â who never raced, but who loved boats â with teaching him everything about boats and how to sail. 'I took to it [sailing] right away. I just loved it.' The California native started his career in the Navy, and later opened Wesco Tool which made airplane parts. His knowledge of the airplane industry would later be evident in his first notable boat design â the Coronado 25. 'I am so proud to sit with these superstar sailors,' said Butler in reference to his fellow Inductees. 'I remember when I built my very first boat. I was about 12-13 years old. I made a boat that was about two feet long; it was a sailboatâŚ I never thought at that time Iâd be building 60,000 boats. I enjoyed itâŚ it was not work. It was so much fun.' Runnie Colie, Jr. (East Windsor, N.J.), has a reputation as one of the nationâs foremost dinghy sailors which he earned sailing Penguins â the double?handed dinghy of choice in the 1940s and â50s â and E?Scows. He is a seven-time International Penguin Champion and eight-time E-Scow Champion. A fierce competitor, Colie started sailing at age nine, and, through the decades also left his mark in the Sunfish, Moth and 5.5?Metre classes. Colieâs impact is evident on sailors who have sailed with or against him, as many of those sailors quote him when teaching others to sail. His never quit attitude, dedication, and attention to detail, had a profound effect on many sailing careers. Committed to the education of the next generation of sailors, Colie established the Carl Van Duyne Memorial Advanced Racing Clinic to honor the life of his good friend who passed away at the young age of 36 in 1986. Held annually for junior sailors, the clinicâs focus is on not only boat handling and tactics, but also sportsmanship, a facet of sailboat racing that both Colie and Van Duyne embodied. 'In my 90th year I am reaching many of my hoped for goals. I can still sail and still win races,' said Stuart Walker (Annapolis, Md). 'I won the heavy air race in the Soling North Americans a month ago.' A retired professor of pediatrics and 1968 Olympian, Walker has authored numerous books on the sport and was a regular contributor to Sailing World magazine. In addition, he was a primary founder of the Severn Sailing Association. NSHOF Inductee Stuart Walker. - NSHOF/Jack Hardway Click Here to view large photo 'Being selected to be a member of the Sailing Hall of Fame, thatâs a real wonderful thing to have happen to you,' said Walker who explained that the most important thing he had ever done was to create the Severn Sailing Association. Walker also confessed to envy at not being selected in the first or second classes of Inductees. 'I began to believe that maybe I would not qualify to be a member of the National Sailing Hall of Fame. And if I had heard that list of Dave Curtisâ accomplishments before I came I would know I had no chance whatever of being a member of the National Sailing Hall of Fame. Iâve won a number of regattas over the years; but there are a lot of people who have done a lot of winning and a lot more important winning than I. I may have sailed in more races than anybody else on the continent, but thatâs just because Iâve lived so longâŚ you have to realize how pleased I am to be selected this time and be honored to be a member of this National Sailing Hall of Fame.' The celebration also recognized, posthumously, the contributions of four notable sailors. Tom Blackaller (1940-1989) started sailing at age 10 when his parents moved the family from Seattle to San Francisco. His notable successes in the Star class began in 1968 when he won the Silver Star at the Western Hemisphere Spring Championship, followed by a second Silver Star at the North American Championship. He would go on to win the Star World Championship twice (1974, â80). In 1973 he won the Six Metre Gold Cup (the class world championship). Fame in the sport accompanied his three 12 Metre campaigns for the right to defend for the Americaâs Cup, losing to rival Dennis Conner each time. He worked as a sailmaker, had a larger-than-life persona, and raced sportscars. With Marbleheadâs deep roots in yachting, it is no surprise that, in addition to Dave Curtis, two other notable residents were inducted to the National Sailing Hall of Fame: renowned naval architect John Gale Alden (1884-1962); and naval architect and aviation pioneer W. Starling Burgess (1878-1947). Alden and Burgess are also linked through their chosen profession as yacht designers. The son of Edward Burgess, designer of Americaâs Cup defenders in 1885, â86 and â87, Starling Burgess exhibited his innovative perspective with the design of the revolutionary 52â scow sloop Outlook in 1901 during his senior year at Harvard University. Burgess, who did not complete his degree at Harvard, expanded his design efforts to aircraft and motoryachts, and through his own aircraft company became one of the first pilots to take off and land on water. In 1905, at the age of 27, he established a boat yard in Marblehead. Alden, who was born in Troy, N.Y., spent his summers in Sakonnet, R.I., before the family relocated to Dorchester, Mass., in 1900 because of his fatherâs health. An anecdote from his childhood (age 12 or 13) describes how he took a 21â Knockabout and sailed it alone from Troy, down the Hudson, to Rhode Island, roughly a 300-mile trip. First and foremost a sailor, Alden, by the age of 18, had worked briefly for Starling Burgess before winning an apprenticeship with B.B. Crowninshield of Boston, the preeminent yacht designer of the day. Aldenâs design talents came to prominence with the success of his Malabar design, which won the Bermuda Race in 1923, â26, and â32, with his hand on the helm each time. Through the 1950s his firm produced more than 900 designs including fireboats, trawlers, motorsailers and power yachts. Born in Hungary, Rosenfeld grew up in New York and was taking his first photographs at age 13 with an ancient box camera, and by age 19 he was recording the sport of sailing. He worked with the leading yacht photographer of the day, Edwin Levick, and studied art at Cooper Union. In 1910 he established his own studio in Manhattan. His love of the water led him to concentrate his photography on maritime activities that would eventually become the centerpiece of a historical collection â acquired in 1984 by Mystic Seaport â of still images of the sport that capture the grace and action of a bygone era. Background - Following a two-month period this spring during which sailors from all corners of the country nominated their choice for induction, a selection committee â made up of representatives from US Sailing, the sailing media, the sailing industry, community sailing, a maritime museum, a previous inductee, and the NSHOF Board â reviewed the broad spectrum of nominations. Inductees are American citizens, 45 years of age and up, who have made significant impact on the growth and development of the sport in the U.S. in the categories of Sailing, Technical/Design and Contributor (coach, administrator, sailing media). Nominations of non-citizens were also considered if they influenced the sport in the U.S., and posthumous nominations were also accepted.
