His specialty is placing top executives in retailing and some of the marquee names he has placed include Sharen Turney, CEO of Victoriaâs Secret and Edgar Huber, CEO of Lands End. Les thought the fact that Ahrendts was willing to leave her prestigious , well paying position (Ahrendts was reported to be the highest paid executive in the U.K. last year at $27 million) was a great example how companies can get stars to jump ship. Les typically gives his clients three important pieces of advice when they want to recruit high priced talent. He wrote them up for me in the article below.

chanel purses outlet You may have seen in the news earlier in the week that Burberryâs (LN: BRBY) CEO Angela Ahrendts has agreed to leave the helm of the renowned British retail empire to become Appleâs (Nasdaq: APPL) new senior vice president of retail. Itâs a rather unconventional move for one of the most sought after CEOâs of a publicly traded consumer brand to leave for a position as a divisional leader of another company.

discount chanel handbags So why did this happen? And how do you get a star like Angela Ahrendts to abandon her leadership role at Burberry to run a division of Apple? Here are three of the most important ways to get a star to leave a company.

Most importantly, they need to be paid what theyâre worth. Just as a movie star gets paid to fill the theater and a top athlete gets paid to fill a stadium, a top retail executive gets paid to fill a store. At times, people might think the amount is excessive, but when they perform, theyâre worth it.

Take the CEO of HSN HSN , Inc. (Nasdaq:HSNI), Mindy Grossman , for example. Grossman was hired at the end of December 2006, shortly before HSNâs initial public offering. Under her leadership, she has transformed HSN and has elevated the companyâs stock price from less than $20 per share to more than $50 per share today. She more than doubled its value. [According to Forbes Grossmanâs total compensation was $1.9 million in 2008]

Similarly, when Michael MacDonald was hired to run discount shoe retail chain DSW DSW , Inc. (NYSE: DSW) in April 2009, the company was trading at less than $11 per share. [Disclosure: my recruiting firm placed Michael MacDonald]

Today, the stock price has escalated to $84 per share, or eight times the value. [Forbes says MacDonaldâs total compensation was about $3 million in 2010]

It goes without saying that both executives have been rewarded handsomely, and are worth every penny.

2) Turn Over the Reigns

A star requires freedom to really run the business. They need to have the authority to make all decisions and changes they see fit, in order to succeed. When Maureen Chiquet was brought into Chanel from the Gap, the Wortheimer family that owns Chanel gave her the freedom that earlier leaders didnât have. She has used that freedom to make a great brand even bigger.

Ahrendts, 53, is joining Apple as a divisional leader reporting directly to Tim Cook. However given her experience she may now be in line to succeed Cook one day.

3) Give them Resources to Execute Their VisionFinally, companies need to provide the resources required for these leaders to execute their vision â and succeed. When Fabrizio Freda left Procter & Gamble to become CEO of The Estee Lauder Companies Inc. (NYSE: EL) in July 2009, the Lauder family not only gave him the freedom to run the company, but they also gave him all the resources he needed to produce the extraordinary results that he has.

Given that it is in Appleâs DNA to reward its leaders with wealth, freedom and resources, Angela is on a clear path to success.

The glowing white marble space, a Yabu Pushelberg -designed shrine, is hopping on a Saturday afternoon in late October. Some visitors are here to buy, others to gawk at Canadaâs biggest womenâs footwear department, the fourth-largest in the world. Itâs an urban female Serengeti, home to 150 brands and more than 40,000 shoes.

Christian Louboutin outlet Expanding the Hudson Bay Companyâs shoe offerings was a priority when president Bonnie Brooks arrived at the company six years ago. Hired from high-end Hong Kong-based retailer Lane Crawford to infuse HBC with fashion moxie, Brooks knew the power of premium shoes, having seen the Asian market explode in the late 1990s.

Footwear outperforms other departments in terms of store productivity and profitability, she says: âShoes and cosmetics offer the highest sales per square foot.â Since her arrival, HBC has tripled its shoe sales. Figures for the downtown store alone are up 63 per cent over last year.

Thereâs solid mercantile rationale behind courting shoe buyers. Footwear is the only part of the fashion market thatâs growing, says Sandy Silva, director of client development for fashion in the Toronto office of research firm NPD Group Inc. Sales of footwear, a $5.2-billion market in Canada, are up two per cent over the past 12 months ending July 2013 versus a two per cent drop in apparel sales, Silva says. Saturation of the womenâs clothing market has led to cutthroat competition and heavy discounting earlier in the season: âFootwear offers a longer life cycle in terms of preserving margin; thatâs why retailers are really on board.â

The upper end of the market offers better gross profit marginsâ as high as 50 per cent, versus 45 per cent on womenâs apparel more generally. Getting high-end designers on board with HBCâs new shoe floor, two years in the making, was a challenge, says Brooks. Some were hesitant to sit in a moderate shoe department or alongside designers they might feel are copying them. âIf you canât provide proper adjacencies, you donât get a brand,â she explains. In the end, all was resolved. âItâs our dream come true to have all the shoes together,â she says.

HBC is not alone in using shoes as bait. Last year, Macy âs flagship New York store unveiled a 63,000-sq.-foot shoe department offering 300,000 pairs. Saks Fifth Avenue , recently purchased by HBC, added 7,000 sq. feet of footwear space at its main New York store. And Barneys New York opened an expanded unisex designer shoe floor featuring more obscure designers to appeal to rich shoe savants. Stores are also sinking money into making the experience luxurious, even emotional. Macyâs provides a champagne and chocolate bar, Saks a camera pointed at shoppers trying on shoes that display images on a big screen.

Such niceties shrewdly capitalize on the tales girls are told about the transformative power of shoes. Cinderellaâs compatibility with a glass slipper saved her from a life of drudgery. A click of Dorothyâs ruby red slippers transported her home. More adult female folklore, notably Sex and the City , is peppered with high-end shoesâManolo Blahnik, Louboutin, Jimmy Choo. Now theyâre the old guard, refreshed with new namesâPaul Andrew, Nicholas Kirkwood and Charlotte Olympia, who just launched a girls’ line.

Cobbler celebrity is such that thereâs a market for their memoirs. In the newly published In My Shoes , Jimmy Choo co-founder Tamara Mellon writes of footwear transcending mere accessory status: âShoes were no longer what you bought to complement the dress; they were the sexy centrepiece of the look.â Mellon, who owns more than 3,000 pairs, just launched an eponymous label, which, of course, includes shoes.

Theyâre the new fashion signifier, says Brooks: âShoes, more than handbags, have become a statement of whether youâre part of the fashion cognoscenti. Nobody cares about what handbag youâre wearing; now people are focused on whether you know what shoe to wear with a certain pant.â At the recent spring fashion shows in Europe, she reports, women in the audience were all wearing open-toed, high-heeled leather ankle booties. She credits the current rage for high heels to the arrival of Louboutinâs hidden platform high heels in the late 1990s: âLouboutin is a genius,â she says. âWomen could be as tall as models.â

Shoe shopping, inherently more pleasurable than shopping for clothes, appears to provide female democracy in other ways. Itâs a way to buy a designer name for a fraction of a clothing purchase. It doesnât summon body-image anxieties. (You reject the shoe as not comfortable or the right colour; it doesnât reject you.) And high heels offer the benefit of what anthropologists call âlordosisââa lift of the behind and an arch of the back commonly seen in primate sexual display.

Marketing gurus have their own theories about the unique allure of shoe shopping. âShoppers rationalize shoes as a practical buyâsomething they can wear multiple times a weekâso they hold on to that pleasurable feeling longer,â Martin Lindstrom writes in Buyology: Truth and Lies About Why We Buy . Academic Suzanne Ferriss, co-editor of the essay collection Footnotes: On Shoes , compares collecting shoes to finding rare stamps; both provide a âmini-adrenalin rush.â

Elizabeth Semmelhack, curator of Torontoâs Bata Shoe Museum , has a more scholarly take on conditioned shoe lust. Shoes have become a primary definer of femininity as other accessories defining status and genderâhats, gloves, pearlsâfell by the wayside, she says. Women and men can now buy the same Gap jeans and T-shirt. But itâs how they accessorize that establishes nuanced social position, she says: âA woman who pairs a Gap T-shirt and jeans with high-end designer heels is saying things about her sexuality, her desirability, her socio-economic status or ambitions; a woman who pairs the same outfit with a high-end sneaker is conveying a different message.â

A long tradition links the social construction of femininity with fashion consumption, Semmelhack says. âIt becomes a self-feeding cycle: if all women love shoes and you want to be a woman you have to love shoes. And if markers of idealized femininity are linked to shoe consumption then women with the most shoes are the most feminine.â She traces the notion women are âshoe-crazyâ or irrational in their purchase of shoes to 18th-century concepts of women being innately irrational. âThis is expressed and identified through their desire to consume fashion,â she says.

The current mania for high heels in particular is retrograde, says Semmelhack, author of Heights of Fashion: A History of the Elevated Shoe . She laughs off the argument that high heels signal female power or success: âIf high heels were really a signifier of power, then men would be as eager to embrace them as women. The fact they arenât means it remains linked only to ideas of sexualized power.â

But the fact women today have access to a wide range of footwear choicesâbeautiful flats, sneakers, riding boots, biker bootsâ does reveal social evolution, she says: âThereâs this huge range of options that suggest weâre living in a less constricted world. But the obverse side of that is that we are now constantly expected to reveal some aspect of ourselves in an interesting nuanced way through consumption, so itâs a double-edged sword.â But thatâs no problem for anyone scoping out female footwearâs expansive new retail habitat. There, the choices seem to go on forever.
