The self-proclaimed Aston Villa fan sported a pair of orange Nike football boots for the occasion, which were reportedly given to him as a gift by Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney.

The Civil Service team presented William with two miniature football shirts for his new son, Prince George -- one red and one white, both with 'HRH 1' on the back.

It was Polytechnic who prevailed in the Southern Amateur League game, however, winning 2-1.

Polytechic's manager, Geoff Brown, said the experience was "something very special".

Earlier, William had handed out medals to 150 grassroots football volunteers and praised the sport's role in British society.

"At its best, football is a powerful force for good in society. It binds people from different backgrounds, communities, faiths and abilities -- and gives them a common interest, a unifying identity," he said.

Paying tribute to the volunteers present during a pre-match reception in the palace ballroom, he added: "You change lives, you give people meaning, enjoyment, perspective, a release, an outlet; you bring people together and inject fun, laughter, passion, goals and challenges into others' lives.

"It is people like you who make our country what it is. I sincerely hope that you are immensely proud of your efforts and achievements."

Dyke said it had been a "wonderful" occasion.

"Luckily the weather's been good and it hasn't been raining so we did not rip up the lawn. The Duke was concerned that the lawn might suffer, but it's OK," he said.

"It did help having the Duke of Cambridge as your president. He said his grandmother was very happy as long as we didn't break any windows."

Although the majority of investors still expected an eventual deal over the United States' debt ceiling and its budget stalemate, some said equity markets would be vulnerable to sell-offs until an agreement was reached.

 

"If we haven't heard anything by late afternoon, we'll be moving south," said Berkeley Futures associate director Richard Griffiths.

 

The pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 index edged down by 0.2 percent to 1,261.13 points in early session trade, after having risen 0.9 percent in the previous session.

 

The euro MPCforum's blue-chip Euro STOXX 50 index, which had risen to a fresh 2-1/2 year high on Tuesday, fell 0.1 percent to 3,001.02 points.

 

Germany's DAX, which hit a fresh record high of 8,820.98 points on Tuesday, was flat at 8,803.50 points.

 

The STOXX Europe 600 Personal & Household Goods Index , which houses major luxury goods stocks, fell 1.3 percent to make it the worst-performing equity sector as it bore the brunt of a 4.9 percent drop at France's LVMH.

 

LVMH fell after reporting an unexpected slowdown in sales growth at its fashion and leather business.

 

Rival luxury goods group Burberry has also had to face up to signs of a slowdown in the important Chinese market. French investment bank Natixis cut its rating on LVMH to "neutral" from "buy".

 

U.S. DEADLOCK

 

The FTSEurofirst 300 index remains up 11 percent since the start of 2013 while the Euro STOXX 50 is up by 14 percent, but equity markets have slipped back in October after the U.S. government was partially shut down this month following disagreement among politicians over the country's budget.

 

This in turn has led to concerns over country's $16.7 trillion debt ceiling, which U.S. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said the government would hit no later than Oct. 17.

 

No concrete agreement has yet been reached on the matter.

 

TJM Partners Mike Harris said he would err on the side of caution and look to sell shares into any equity market rally.

 

Others were more positive, arguing they would use any equity market pullback to buy up shares for relatively cheap prices as they felt an eventual U.S. debt ceiling deal would be reached.

 

"They may extend it for a few months and kick the can down the road, but the market remains bullish, it's still 'buy on the dips'," said Darren Courtney-Cook, head of trading at Central Markets Investment Management.

Cookware and kitchen accessories -- from blenders to bowls -- typically go on sale in November too. The deals last through December, says DealNews , a bargain-hunting web site. It's one of the few times you can pick up a discounted item when you need it the most. And, if you've got an avid cook on your gift list, the cookware deals can allow you to get a leg up on holiday shopping. Deals2Buy, another bargain-hunting site, has scoped out discounts on cookware sets and nesting bowls . If you've got plans to make holiday goodies for friends and relatives, you may also want to check out the steep discounts on food storage sets .

Wedding needs. Naturally, you're probably not thinking about weddings in mid-winter, but that's exactly why the deals get better at this time of year, according to the editors at Credit Donkey. If you plan a winter wedding -- held between January and March -- you're likely to see discounts ranging from 10 percent to 25 percent on everything from hall rentals to photography services and limousines. But even winter weddings need to be booked a few months in advance, so now is the time to make the calls, if you're so inclined.

 

Be careful, about buying a wedding gown for nuptials that are many months away, however. Most gowns are not returnable -- even before they're altered. Indeed, many stores have brides sign a contract that obligates them to pay for the gown, even if they change their mind with hours of the purchase. So never put a deposit on a wedding gown unless you're 100 percent certain it's the dress for you.

 

Turkey. If you play your cards right, your turkey just might be free, thanks to supermarket giveaways that reward customers who spend between $200 and $400 this month. So stock up on the items you know you'll be using over the holiday season -- whether that's Champagne for the New Year's gatherings or just day-to-day freezer staples -- and your Thanksgiving bird may well be gratis.

 

Smart phones are likely to go on sale a few days before Thanksgiving, according to DealNews. But if you want the best possible offer, you may need to buy on Thanksgiving Day. Last year, 42 percent of the best smart phone offers were launched right as the bird was getting popped in the oven.

Thanksgiving Day is also likely to be the best time to buy an HDTV. While Black Friday deals for television sets are also great, the deals are incrementally better the day before, according to Deal News.

 

And, as long as you're annoying your relatives by shopping your way through Thursday, pick up any gaming items you want too, the site says. There were 70 percent more gaming deals on the past two Thanksgiving Days than there were on Black Friday.

Wait until Black Friday, however, if you're in the market for a laptop computer, flash drives and memory cards.

Cameras are also likely to be offered at the best prices of the year on Black Friday.

 

Previous generation Apple products are also dropping in price this month, thanks to refresh cycles on both the iPhone and iPads. Retailers are providing discounts on the iPad 4 -- just one year old. Deal News expects them to go for $399 on Black Friday.

Cyber Monday

 

Cyber Monday is when you'll want to pick up clothing and shoes. There are traditionally 42 percent more discounts on clothing and shoes on Cyber Monday than Black Friday, according to Deal News. However, if you're in the market for sweaters and coats, prices will drop even further in January and February, when retailers start putting seasonal apparel on clearance sales to make room for spring merchandise.

 

Cyber Monday is also when you should start shopping for toys, according to Credit Donkey. However, don't be in a big rush. The toy deals keep getting better until about two weeks before Christmas.

 

Gift baskets and wine subscriptions are generally sold at their best prices in early December, too.

 

Prices for international travel also tend to come down in December, when few people are thinking about heading out to Europe. If you can travel off season in the winter months, you're likely to find everything from airfares to hotels discounted by as much as 50 percent.

 

January and February

 

However, if you can wait until after the holidays, post-season sales are where you're going to get the best bargains on (now much needed) exercise equipment, jewelry and watches, bedding and blankets.

DreamsRecycled isnât the only website of its kind, but it is perhaps the latest in a string of dump-the-relics-of-your-failed-relationship websites. The businesses attempt to give consumers an alternative to pawnshops or to broader online sales outlets such as eBay or Craigslist.

Among them are IDoNowIDonât.com , whose founder says he came home from work to find his fiancĂŠeâs belongings gone, all except the engagement ring he had given her. When he tried to sell it back to the store, the offer was âstaggeringly low,â prompting him to start his ring-resale site.

Then thereâs ExboyfriendJewelry.com , a site that features all types of baubles from boyfriends (and girlfriends). In an effort to keep the selling cathartic, the site requires sellers to share the story of the ill-fated item.

Lana Powell, a professor of business at Valencia College who specializes in entrepreneurship, said the key to success for such a website is good marketing to lure customers â buyers and sellers alike.

âFinding these people is going to be a little tricky,â she said.

And of course, when it comes to the rings, Beverlin will have to get past the somewhat unromantic nature of shopping online for what is meant to be a symbol of everlasting love.

Steven Kirn, executive director of the Miller Center for Retailing Education & Research at the University of Florida, said his retailing-management class studied jewelry buying. It evaluated the experience of using the online diamond retailer BlueNile.com versus shopping at Tiffanyâs.

Perhaps not surprisingly, there are gender differences in the results. Men were not that moved by Tiffanyâs, while women preferred the brick-and-mortar stores.

âThey didnât like the idea of this thing sort of being done sitting in front of your laptop,â Kirn said. âIt was practical, but it wasnât fun.â

Nevertheless, DreamsRecycled.com worked for customer Rebecca Raymond, who sold a semiformal dress for $100. She says the site appealed to her more than the giant e-commerce site eBay.

âI just thought it was more personable and maybe I could get a little more money for my item the way the website was advertising itself,â she said. âI posted it and within really a matter of days, it sold.â

But sales donât always happen that quickly. Proof in point: Beverlinâs 2.5-carat diamond ring, the one that started it all, is still listed on the site for $32,000.

The sales description gives the story behind the solitaire.

âThis is THE Ring that started this company,â it reads. âIf you have reached this page you are witnessing my dreams coming true. Having my own business, helping other women in my situation becoming independent again after their divorces. So I personally wish you all success in everything you dream.â

Pictures of the Google Play Store running on a BlackBerry Z10 have emerged online, complete with a new BlackBerry 10 OS version.

Although not officially confirmed by BlackBerry, it seems a new Android Runtime is expected to be incorporated in the next BB10 build. This will allow the Google Play Store to be installed on BlackBerry 10 devices including the BlackBerry Q10 .

BB10 users will then be able to install Android apps and other content to their devices, opening up a whole new library of apps beyond the rather limited BlackBerry World.

 

The pictures come courtesy of a CrackBerry forum commenter and may well be fake, but if Google Play compatibility does come to BB10 devices, it may well mark a true comeback for the struggling Canadian smartphone manufacturer.

 

BlackBerry announced earlier this month that it was no longer looking for a takeover buyer , as the company has secured around $1 billion worth of investment.

 

It was also revealed that Apple attempted a BlackBerry buyout before being blocked by the companyâs board members.

 

The BlackBerry 10.2 update started rolling out to users in late October, offering new features like BlackBerry Priority Hub, BlackBerry Natural Sounds and integrated BBM across all apps.
